Seven hundred kilometers off the coast of Morocco lies one of Europe's prime adventure destinations, Madeira. An island of volcanic origin with a rough and bountiful nature, this is the perfect location for adventure.
The mountain barrier splitting the island in two gives Madeira its extraordinary variety of landscapes, and its lush vegetation has earned it the nickname “floating garden of the Atlantic”.
Whether you are hiking, mountain biking, or scuba diving enthusiast, Madeira offers a wide range of opportunities. This tour offers optional extras, such as whale watching and canyoning!

Day 8: Funchal - AirportDay 1: Arrival in Madeira
Arrive at Madeira airport and transfer to Funchal, the main town of Madeira located on the sunny southern coast of the island.Accommodation for this night and all following nights: 4* Pestana Village Garden, with a swimming pool and beautiful gardens just 10 minutes from the city center.
Day 2: Machico - Baia d'Abra - Prainha - Machico, 6 mi. (10 km) | Elevation: +250 / -250 meters (+820 / -820 ft)
You will be transferred to the São Lourenço Point. On this African-like strip of land, this hike explores the long thin peninsula at the eastern end of the island through a natural reserve covered in scrubby vegetation offering spectacular views over the Atlantic ocean and the magnificently colorful cliffs. Day 3: Camacha - Santo da Serra - Porto da Cruz 15 mi. (8 km) | Elevation: +183 / -183 meters (+600 / -600 ft)
Transfer from Funchal to Camacha. Cycling on a scenic road, lined with eucalyptus and pine trees, you will go to the village of Santo da Serra. Explore the southeast coast of the island and its deep valleys where rural life is at its height. Riding a winding road, you will reach Porto da Cruz, a small seaside village on the north-east coast of the island. (B, Picnic, D)Activity: Cycling
Day 4: Santana - Pico das Pedras - Ilha - Santana, 8 mi. (13 km) | Elevation: +100 / -500 meters (+328 / -1640 ft)
Transfer to Santana on the North Coast. From the beautiful forest house of Queimadas, you will descend into the depths of the earth along the Caldeirão Verde levada carved out of the rock and winding its way through a primary forest inscribed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage list. At the end of the path, you will discover an impressive waterfall running into a crystal-clear lake. (B, D)Activity: 5-hour walk
Day 5: Pico Ruivo - Pico de Ariero, 5 mi. (8 km) | Elevation: +500 / -750 meters (+1640 / -2290 ft)
You will hike across the mountain ridge trails to the highest peaks of the island. The scenery is breathtaking with rocky peaks and deep gorges. If the weather cooperates, at Pico Ruivo, you will enjoy panoramic views over the island and the island of Porto Santo in the distance. (B, D)Activity: 5-hour walk
Day 6: Encumeada- Porto Moniz, 21 mi. (34 km) | Elevation: +149 / -1097 meters (+490 / -3600 ft)
A transfer will take you to Paul da Serra plateau, via Encumeada Pass, and its timeless atmosphere at 1500 meters above sea level, where the moorland stretches as far as eyes can see. You will feast on magnificent views over the central ridge of the island and the north coast. After a series of ascents and descents, you will ride to the fishing village of Porto Moniz on the North coast, where you will enjoy natural swimming pools built in volcanic rock. Day 7: Funchal
Transfer from Jardim do Mar to Funchal (45 min.) You will then have free time to visit Funchal. Highlights include the Farmer's Market, Monte Parish, and the botanical garden. Wine tasting is included. (B, D)Activities: canyoning and whale watching (optional)

Mountain bike tour along the levadas (small irrigation canals) through an endemic laurel forest, along with a pine and eucalyptus forest; then you will ride to the Portela pass offering spectacular views over the Penha d’Aguia mountain and the fishing village of Porto da Cruz. This tour offers two itinerary options. The premium itinerary offers accommodations in the 4-star Hotel Pestana Village Garden. Just a 10 minute walk from the city center, this 4-star hotel features indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, and a jacuzzi. Please note that transfers to the walk are on average about one hour. The 3-star option features various hotels and inns. For example, your first two nights will be spent at the White Waters, a modern family-run hotel in Machico’s Main Square, just 650 feet from the beach.
For those who only want to unpack once and be accommodated outside the city center of Funchal, the 4-star option is the right choice. For those who like to move every couple of nights, the 3-star option suits you better.

Local Travel
Upon arrival to the Funchal Airport, you will be transferred to your first hotel. At the end of your tour, you will be transferred back to the airport.

The climate is mild all year long in Madeira! The sunniest period is from May to October.
Remarks
Most international flights will include a transfer in Lisbon. If you would like to make a stopover there, and need suggestions and arrangements, let us know. We can help.
